Driving in Snow and Ice

The weather forecast is for snow and ice to hit throughout the UK overnight tonight and for temperatures to plummet.
Here are some important tips to follow when driving in snow and ice and to help avoid the likelihood of a road traffic accident.
1. Stopping distances are 10 times longer in ice and snow – so keep your distance.
2. Make very gentle stops and turns. Try to maintain a constant speed.
3. Wear comfortable dry shoes – snow covered boots could slip easily on the pedals.
4. Select 2nd gear when pulling away, easing your foot gently off the clutch to avoid a wheel spin.
5. When driving downhill choose 3rd or 4th gear to prevent skidding.
6. Always apply the brakes gently. Release them and de-clutch if the car skids.
7. If you get stuck straighten the steering wheel and clear the snow from the wheels. Put a sack or old rug in front of the driving wheels to provide the tyres with some grip.
