Fatal Car Accident On Notorious Yorkshire Road

A 65 year old man has died following a car crash at a North Yorkshire accident blackspot.

The car accident involved two vehicles travelling in the opposite direction; a Vauxhall Vectra and a Mercedes. The Vauxhall driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other driver, a 27 year old from Scarborough, was taken to James Cook University Hospital along with the passenger. They were told they had non-life threatening conditions.

Eye Witness Heard The Cars Collide

A witness to the accident was a local farmer who said he heard the cars collide as he was bringing his cows in from the field. He added that the road where the accident happened was unlit and there are double white lines and hidden dip signs on it.

He said that the man did not respond when he tried to speak him following the smash. He said: “I saw that one of the cars must have spun round on impact and when I opened the door, the man in it did not respond.”

History Of Road Traffic Accidents On The Road

Reports show that the 11 mile stretch along the A171 where the accident happened has a history of road traffic accidents. In the last 5 years there has been 80 road accidents resulting in injuries, 5 of which were fatal and 25 were considered serious injuries.

A few days prior to the crash a woman suffered major injuries in an accident involving four cars and a truck at Scaling Dam. At the beginning of the year, a National express coach collided with a milk tanker at the same spot in Scaling Dam.

The farmer said that a family of six overturned in a car outside his farm recently and there was also a fatal motorcycle accident there 6 years ago. He said: “You get hardened to these crashes but I can’t see any suitable way of making the road safer.

A council spokesperson urged everyone using the road to allow sufficient time for their journeys and asked them to be patient when sharing the road with more ‘vulnerable’ users like cyclists.
