Four out of five collisions on the county roads of Gloucestershire in the first six months of 2009 were caused by driver or rider error.

Researchers from the Gloucestershire Road Safety Partnership have been compiling casualty and collision data for the first half of this year. Overall, there were 89 serious injuries and 660 slight injuries between January and June 2009. The evaluation has revealed that 88 per cent of collisions were down to driver or pedestrian error with drivers or riders accounting for the vast majority. This had lead to a rise in the amount of whiplash injury claims and personal injury compensation claims in Gloucestershire.
Councillor Stan Waddington, the county council's cabinet member for environment and road safety, said: "The fatality figure is lower than in previous years and we are still working hard to cut the number of deaths on our roads. It is particularly concerning to see that 80 per cent of these collisions were caused by driver or rider error “ that is something we need to address. Gloucestershire County Council runs a range of safer driver courses and work with children from a young age to educate them about road safety.
