Toxoplasmosis Claims

Toxoplasmosis is a disease that is spread through a common parasite that is able to move from animals to humans. There are different types of toxoplasmosis gondii (the micro-organism which causes toxoplasmosis) all of which can be dangerous to humans if they enter the body.

You can contract toxoplasmosis if you drink milk or eat food (pork, beef or lamb) that has been contaminated or if you are handling cat faeces that have been infected. In very extreme cases, blindness can be caused and if you have a more vulnerable immune system, the effects can be more severe.

Risk of Toxoplasmosis

Certain professions are more at risk of developing toxoplasmosis than others. Those who work in following occupations are more likely to be exposed to the dangers of toxoplasmosis:

  • Healthcare workers must ensure that they wear protective gloves when working with patients who have bowel problems. Employers must also ensure that they provide their employees with personal protective equipment when necessary.
  • Laboratory workers who have been in contact with needles contaminated with toxoplasmosis are also at risk. Therefore, laboratory health and safety procedures must be adhered to by both employers and employees.
  • Those who work in professions that involve contact with animals, such as vets or zookeepers are also at risk of toxoplasmosis. Therefore, there must be an availability of sanitary and cleaning equipment available to employees.
  • Farmworkers can become contaminated with toxoplasmosis as the soil can be used as a means of spreading the disease if the soil has come into contact with cat faeces. Gardeners and landscapers may also be at risk of being exposed to toxoplasmosis gondii in this way. Therefore, within these professions it is often a good idea to wear gloves when handling soil or other similar materials.
  • Slaughterhouse workers or other workers who handle raw meat, like cooks must always ensure that they are wearing gloves.

If work clothing has been contaminated, then it should be kept away from others and it should be washed with disinfectant to follow safety guidelines and lower the chances of anyone else becoming infected.

How Much Compensation?

All personal injury cases are unique and so the amount of compensation that is awarded in each case is also unique. Compensation is understood by looking at two specific factors: general damages and special damages.

General Damages

The pain and suffering that your injuries have caused are main factors that are used to determine how much general damage compensation you are owed. This will usually be determined by undergoing a medical examination, from which a report is created that highlights the length of time the injuries will take to heal as well as their severity. Our compensation calculator will give you an indication of how much general damage compensation you might be entitled to based upon your injuries.

Special Damages

In addition to receiving compensation for your injuries, you may be able to reclaim any financial losses that you might have suffered as a result of your injuries. Compensation for financial losses is known as special damages compensation. This can include losses such as loss of earnings due to not being able to return to work, the cost of treatment as well as travel to treatment. It is important that you keep any receipts or evidence of additional losses in order for these to be reclaimed. With the exception of children, there is a three-year time limit on making a personal injury claim. This time limit begins from the date that the accident initially occurred. Therefore, you should contact a personal injury solicitor as soon as possible to assess your case.
