Garden Center Work Related Injuries

It may look idyllic but a garden center is a dangerous place to work.  Garden center employees are at risk from bank injuries as a result of lifting heavy or awkward loads such as fertilizer bags, large pots and large plants.  Long term back injuries could result from repeated strain on the back but other injuries could occur by dropping loads.  The employer has an obligation to ensure that lifting equipment is provided and well maintained, that employees are trained in lifting techniques and that warnings are placed on bags/plants/pots to indicate that they are particularly heavy.

Another hazard which is specific to this kind of work is the risk from chemicals such as pesticides, fungicides and cleaning equipment. These chemicals can cause skin or respiratory damage, damage to the eyes or even poisoning.  It is essential therefore that chemicals are labeled correctly, that employees are aware of procedures should there be a spill and that personal protective gear like gloves and goggles are worn.

Garden Centers sell and use sharp tools.  Care must be taken to train employees in the correct use of all equipment.  Forks or rakes can cause puncture wounds, and the blades of mowers and shears can cause lacerations.

As in any other workplace it is the employers duty to assess hazards and to put in place safety precautions.  If you have been injured while working in a garden center and you feel that you were not adequately protected by your employer you may have a case for a personal injury claim.  If so you should seek the advice of an experienced Personal Injury lawyer.
