Industrial diseases of the skin often result from exposure to chemical irritants, such as solvents and cutting fluids. The occupations at highest risk of occupational skin disease are hairdressers, barbers and labourers involved in the manufacture of rubber chemicals, soaps and cleaners.

Dermatitis is the most common form of occupational skin disease. The skin, at first rough and raw, may itch and become cracked and sore. The rash may be diffuse, as with eczema, if the individual has had exposure to irritating and sensitising agents or pimple, like as with acne, if the individual has had exposure to mineral oils, pitch or chlorinated hydrocarbons.
