Taxi Accidents
Firstly, do not put yourself at unnecessary risk when using taxis. Remember that mini cabs are not allowed by law to ply for hire and they must be booked by telephoning the mini cab company. Only licensed taxis (Hackney Carriages or Black Cabs) can ‘ply for hire’ – be hailed in the street by passengers. Private hire vehicles – known as mini cabs – must be pre-booked.
Thousands of people in the UK use taxis every day but even the most experience taxi driver will occasionally have an accident. If you are a passenger in a taxi accident, unless you were causing a distraction or involved in some other way, is always viewed by the law to be an innocent party. If you are involved in an accident whilst you are travelling by taxi it is essential that you record the details of the accident. You should make a note of the following:
- The name and address of the taxi driver
- The name and phone number of the taxi company
- The registration number of the taxi
- The name and address of any other driver involved
- The registration number of any other vehicle involved
- The name and addresses of any witnesses
- Take photos or make sketches of the accident scene
If you gather this information at the time of the accident it is likely to make your compensation claim more straightforward and more successful.
If you have been a passenger in a taxi that was involved in an accident in which you were injured you may be entitled to claim compensation and should seek the advice of an experience personal injury lawyer.
