The sudden and tragic death of actress Natasha Richardson has led many of us to question the fragility of human life. It would appear that a relatively low impact skiing accident, from which the actress walked away apparently unscathed, later led to an excruciating headache and then her death.

The autopsy has shown that the actress died because of an epidural hematoma. Put simply, this is bleeeding between the skull and the brain's covering.
This condition is typical of an acceleration-deceleration head injury and there is speculation that the actress may not have even bumped her head but may have suffered from an injury similar to whiplash or shaken baby syndrome.
Whiplash injuries are more commonly caused by road traffic accidents. They occur when a car is hit from the rear and the force that travels through the car causes the passengers and driver to jerk forwards and then suddenly backwards.
