Whiplash Injury

What is whiplash?

Whiplash is an injury that occurs when a person’s head and neck are suddenly and forcefully thrown backwards then forwards again. The impact of this forces the head and neck to move beyond their normal range, which can lead to tissue damage and pain in the head, neck, shoulders and base of the skull. While most people will recover from pain and discomfort within a matter of weeks, a small percentage may experience chronic symptoms.

What causes it?

One of the most common causes of whiplash is car collisions which occur as a result of sudden deceleration, for example, when a stationary vehicle is hit from behind by another. As the seat pushes the body forward, the head and neck are forced backward, causing hyperextension. The head and neck soon follow the torso forward, and fall into a hyperflexed position.

What should I do if I experience whiplash?

Treatment for whiplash generally tends to depend on the severity of the injury however, even if you aren’t experiencing any symptoms, it is recommended that you see a doctor. Whilst you may not feel anything at present, damage may still have been done or it is possible that your symptoms have been delayed.

How can I prevent whiplash?

Preventing car accidents is not always possible, however significant developments have been made in vehicle safety to help prevent the various risks involved with traffic collisions. While some believe whiplash protection devices are generally unsuccessful, others claim that advances in seatbelt and headrest design have managed to lower the occurrence of whiplash injury. However, the correct use of this equipment is essential to their effectiveness.

Can I claim for whiplash?

The effects of whiplash can range from mildly troublesome to hugely disruptive. For some, the symptoms of their injury can lead to long periods of discomfort and pain and perhaps prolonged time away from work. If you are not to blame for a whiplash injury that was the result of a road traffic accident, then you have the civil right to make a compensation claim.
