Bonfire Night Health And Safety

05 Nov 2020

Bonfire night is always great fun and it is an especially lovely time for children to see fireworks displays or to play with sparklers. While fireworks are a lot of fun, it’s important to remember health and safety procedures regarding fireworks so that you can have a safe bonfire night.

Safe Bonfire Night Tips And Tricks

If you are using fireworks it is important to remember that only adults should be lighting/operating the fireworks. Children should stay a safe distance away from the fireworks at all times. The adults should remember to:

Make a claim

  • You should have a bucket of water nearby to put the fireworks in after they have been lit.
  • Adults should first ensure that there are no flammable materials, including plants, near to where the fireworks are being planted.
  • The firework should be placed with the bottom facing the ground or on a stand if one is provided with it.
  • The adult who is lighting the firework should ensure that everyone is aware of what is about to happen, so that they will not approach the area.
  • When the firework is lit, the adult must move away from the firework themselves. This should be done as quickly as possible.
  • Once the firework display is over and it is once again safe to approach the area, the adult should put the firework in the bucket of water for the time being.
  • You should not go near to a firework after it has been lit until after the firework has obviously exploded and the display has finished. If the firework has not ‘gone off’, you should not approach it to see what the problem is because you could be seriously injured if it goes off while you are near to it.

If you follow the tips listed above, you should reduce the likelihood of you suffering a firework related accident. It is important to remember to perform these steps for each and every firework that you light. If you follow these firework health and safety steps, you should have a perfectly safe bonfire night.

If you have any pets, you should bear their comfort in mind. Many pets find the loud noises that fireworks produce frightening. This is because loud noises often indicate that you are close to danger, so for pets who cannot rationalise what the loud noise is coming from the fireworks could trigger their flight or fight response.

If you have a dog you should give it a good walk before bonfire night, as this will help to tire your dog out. If your dog is tired, it will hopefully be relaxed and calm when the fireworks begin to go off. You should keep your pets inside and you should close all the windows and the curtains so that the sounds of the explosions are reduced.

Sparkler Safety

Sparklers are a well-established part of bonfire night. However, there are certain rules that you and your family should follow in order to remain safe. You should:

  • Not give sparklers to any children under the age of five.
  • Wear gloves at all times while using sparklers.
  • Remain standing while using sparklers.
  • Hold sparklers at arm’s length.
  • Drop sparklers that are finished with in a bucket of water.
  • Don’t run while using a sparkler.

Furthermore, it is important to not place the bonfire near to trees or other plants, where it could potentially cause a more serious fire if a log or something else rolls off. You should follow all of these tips and steps to ensure that you have a safe bonfire night.

If you remember all of these tips and follow them during bonfire night you should have a great evening without any issue. From our team at First Personal Injury we hope that you have a lovely time and that you stay safe.
