Delivery Driver Accidents at Work

While anyone who is driving on the road is at risk of suffering an accident and becoming injured, delivery drivers are even more at risk due to the amount of time that they spend on the road as well as time constraints of their job creating added pressure. Drivers could also suffer an accident while loading or unloading their cargo. No matter how you were injured, if the accident wasn’t your fault, First Personal Injury is here to help you get the compensation you deserve.

You can call us on 0800 808 9740 or contact us online where we will assess your right to claim.

Possible Delivery Driver Accidents

Road Traffic Accidents

While most delivery drivers finish their shift without accident, it is possible that you could be involved in a car crash or different type of road traffic accident while on the job. If you are a food delivery driver you may be even more at risk, as food delivery drivers often use motorcycles or bicycles which can be more dangerous on the road especially if other vehicles are not properly checking their surroundings.

If you were injured due to someone else’s negligence while on the road, you can claim compensation in response. However, you could also claim if you have suffered an injury due to having an issue with your vehicle which was not properly taken care of by your employer. This is only an option if the vehicle was issued to you by your employer, rather than your delivery vehicle being a private vehicle that you own.

You could also suffer an injury due to the cargo that you are delivering being improperly stocked which could cause your vehicle to turn over while driving. Improperly stocked cargo could also cause an accident if the cargo hit you or fell on you due to it being improperly stored.

Manual Handling Accidents

Manual handling accidents are fairly common which is why manual handling should be avoided where possible. If manual handling is an essential part of your job role however, there are certain precautions that your employer should put in place to help ensure your safety such as:

• Ensure that the correct amount of staff members lift an item. For example, if there is a heavy item that requires two people to lift it, two employees should lift the item together rather than it being left to one person.

• Risk assessments should be completed for all activities related to the job role to ensure that you are safe at all times.

• Provision of the correct safety equipment needed to complete tasks, such as work boots to guard against items being dropped on feet.

• The correct training to know how to properly lift items by the manual handling guidelines and to know how to work machinery relevant to the job role.

• The ability to use helpful machinery when necessary for the job role.

If your employer has not carried out these safety precautions and this has resulted in you suffering an accident, which has led to injury, then you may be eligible to claim delivery driver compensation. If your employer has not engaged with other precautions that are not listed above that you believe could have helped make your job safer, you may also be able to claim on the basis of that negligence.

Making a Claim

You are entitled to make a claim against your employer or another driver on the road if you believe that the accident was not your fault. At First Personal Injury we will work to assess your case and understand the extent of your injuries as well as the larger effect that the accident has had on your life. For example, if you have been unable to return to work due to the accident, you may be able to get compensation to cover any earnings that you have lost.

Compensation will be awarded on an individual basis. For example, a delivery driver who suffered a head injury while securing cages was awarded £75,000. Your compensation could be less than this or more depending upon the nature of your injuries and the impact that they have had upon your life.
