Injured At Work: Firefighter Compensation

Firefighter Compensation

Being a Firefighter is known to be an incredibly dangerous job as you often have to place yourself in life-threatening situations to save others. However, there are certain precautions and procedures that Firefighters have to follow help to decrease the likelihood of injury occurring. If you have been injured in an accident that wasn’t your fault, you could be able to claim Firefighter compensation. To find out how much compensation you may be able to claim, contact First Personal Injury as soon as possible.

You can call us on 0800 808 9740 or contact us online to assess your right to claim.

Firefighter Equipment

Firefighters should be given protective equipment to help reduce the likelihood of an accident occurring. This equipment is often referred to as bunker gear or turnout gear and is the personal protective equipment (PPE) worn by Firefighters when they respond to an incident. The guidelines for this equipment is outlined by the National Fire Chiefs Council.

This personal protective equipment consists of:

  • A trousers/jacket combination.
  • Protective Boots.
  • Helmets/a hard hat to help protect their heads when going into a blaze.
  • A mask and respiratory equipment to stop the Firefighter from inhaling harmful substances and to also protect the face from flame.
  • Heat-resistant gloves to protect the Firefighter’s hands from the heat or any chemicals that they might encounter.

All equipment must have three components to it: an outer shell, a moisture barrier and a thermal barrier. If you have not been provided with the right equipment or your equipment is faulty, you could be injured. If you have been injured because of the negligence of your employer to provide you with safe, working equipment, you could claim Firefighter compensation.

Firefighter Compensation Accidents

Accidents can also occur while they are at the station or while they are performing training exercises. These sorts of accidents can include:

  • Slip, trip and fall accidents – often caused by poorly maintained ground or a lack of care when designing a training exercise.
  • Being hit by an object – you could potentially be hit by an object whilst performing a training exercise or whilst walking around the fire station.
  • Burn/smoke inhalation injuries – you could potentially suffer a burn/ smoke inhalation injury during a serious training exercise if you have not been taught the proper procedures about how to deal with a fire or if you haven’t been provided with the right equipment.

If you have been injured during a training exercise or whilst working at the station as a result of another person’s negligence contact First Personal Injury to see whether you could make a Firefighter compensation claim.

Amount of Compensation

All personal injury cases are unique and so the amount of compensation that is awarded in each case is also unique. The pain and suffering that your injuries have caused is the main factor that is used to determine how much compensation you are owed. This will usually be determined by undergoing a medical which looks at the length of time the injuries will take to heal as well as their severity.

In addition to receiving compensation for your injuries, you may be able to reclaim any financial losses that you might have suffered as a result of your injuries. This can include losses such as loss of earnings due to not being able to return to work, the cost of treatment as well as travel to treatment. It is important that you keep any receipts or evidence of additional losses in order for these to be reclaimed.

Our compensation calculator will give you an indication of how much you might be entitled to based upon your injuries. First Personal Injury will take the different details relating to your injury into account when calculating how much compensation you should be awarded, which will then be put forward to the opposing side and the judge.
