Broken Jaw Compensation

The medical term for jawbone breaks is mandibular fractures.

These types of fractures can be experienced in the upper and lower jaw. There can often be long-term suffering and effects for people who experience a broken jaw due to an accident.

If you have experienced a broken jaw through no fault of your own, then you could be entitled to claim compensation.

Common Kinds of Broken Jaw Compensation

The most common scenarios in which a broken jaw can occur are:

  • Car or road traffic accidents
  • Physical assaults
  • Experiencing a slip, trip or fall accident which results in you hitting your face on a hard surface
  • Sports-related injuries

Effects of a Broken Jaw

A broken jaw can cause a lot of problems in terms of physical ability after the accident and subsequent treatment for this injury. For example, they can limit someone’s ability to talk and eat without discomfort until the injury is completely healed. Such injuries can often be distressing and limiting, sometimes affecting your ability to work and enjoy life.

Below are some common effects that a broken jaw can lead to:

  • Some upper jaw breaks can cause visual disturbances such as double vision
  • Numbness or tingling in the face, chin or cheekbones – which can be permanent
  • An inability to open the mouth fully or partially
  • Nerve damage
  • Teeth misalignment (malocclusion)
  • An inability to speak or eat as they would normally
  • Swelling and bleeding within the mouth
  • Jaw pain

In some cases, treatment for your jaw break may involve surgery and/or you may have to stitches or jaw wiring.

If your accident was at work, then it could be that your employer was to blame by not supplying the correct safety equipment for your job. Or a fellow employee could have displayed negligent behaviour which leads to you suffering an injury. You may have also been involved in a car accident which resulted in a broken jaw.

Physical assaults are another very common way in which jaw injuries are sustained. Sometimes your personal injury lawyer may recommend pursuing a criminal injury case if you have been assaulted. Whatever the background to your broken jaw compensation case, it must be demonstrated that your injury was because of the fault of another party rather than yourself.

Amount of Compensation for a Broken Jaw injury

If you have suffered an injury to the jaw it is advisable that you speak to us so we can assess your specific situation and give you advice on how to approach making a claim.

Compensation is assessed on an individual basis as no two cases are the same. Factors such as the severity of the injuries resulting from an accident as well as the impact that these injuries have had upon the victim’s ability to function, such as if they are no longer able to work and the loss of earnings that this would create, are taken into account. Additional costs such as travel or treatment costs relating to the injuries are taken into account.

Even for more simple jaw fractures that heal relatively quickly, this type of injury can still cause a lot of pain and suffering. These types of jaw fractures will usually result in compensation pay-outs between £4,500 and £7,000. More serious jaw injuries which cause long-term negative effects, such as difficulty in movement, can result in compensation payouts of anywhere between £6,500 and £22,000.
